A well-established commercial insurance provider is seeking a Senior Specialist Underwriter to join its team serving the West Region. This role offers a hybrid/remote work arrangement, with occasional travel required to branch offices and client locations. The company operates across 11 offices in 10 states and specializes in providing insurance solutions to niche industries such as construction, forest products, and oil & gas.
Summary: The Senior Specialist Underwriter is responsible for evaluating commercial insurance applications, underwriting new and renewal business, and managing a group of agencies within the assigned region. This position requires strong analytical, communication, marketing, and territory management skills.
Evaluate and underwrite commercial insurance applications, determining whether to accept, decline, or modify requests in alignment with company guidelines.
Review and assess exposure changes during policy periods with a focus on the company's target programs.
Quote and negotiate pricing for new and renewal business, demonstrating knowledge of ISO, NCCI, statutory requirements, and industry standards.
Develop and manage relationships with a group of independent agencies, including appointments, performance reviews, credit management, and profit-sharing opportunities.
Prospect for new agency partnerships and assess profitability and growth potential.
Conduct regular visits to agencies and customer offices for marketing, relationship building, and service purposes.
Formulate and achieve sales goals, including premium targets, loss ratio objectives, and business forecasting.
Promote risk control, claims, and audit services to support client retention and satisfaction.
Identify and respond to changes in customer operations or financial conditions.
Mentor junior underwriters and assist in training and oversight of non-technical tasks as needed.
Provide underwriting support for complex, large, or unique risks requiring advanced technical knowledge.
Collaborate on special projects related to program development, market research, data analysis, and industry representation.
Stay up to date with regulatory, market, and corporate changes relevant to the assigned lines of business.
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Insurance, Risk Management, Business, or a related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
Significant underwriting experience with commercial lines, ideally in specialty industries.
In-depth understanding of commercial insurance coverages, underwriting principles, and regulatory requirements.
Proven ability to build and manage agency relationships and achieve profitable growth.
Strong decision-making, negotiation, and communication skills.
Ability to travel as needed for business development and relationship management.
