Job Description

The Finance Consultant will play a crucial role in supporting the growth of the private mortgage REIT, as well as in refining and enhancing its financial processes and controls. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, exceptional attention to detail, highly organized work habits, and a keen interest in accounting for residential Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities (RMBS), residential mortgage loans, and associated securitizations, including revenue recognition and consolidation.

Location: Fully Remote

Payrate: $50-$80 an hour

Hours: M-F flexible business hours

Solid technical accounting skills, a comprehensive understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and the ability to determine appropriate accounting treatments and journal entries are essential. Preferred candidates will also have knowledge of accounting requirements for RMBS, mortgage loans, securitization and re-securitization transactions, repurchase agreements, interest rate swaps, and To Be Announced (TBA) transactions.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the REIT Finance Team to assess and review third-party service providers' investment accounting processes and outputs.
  • Oversee the preparation of accounting and financial statements by third-party service providers, including monthly general ledger maintenance such as bank reconciliations, intercompany accounts, and tracking mortgage interest payments and expenses.
  • Handle accounting and reporting tasks for whole loan pools, including purchases, sales, and securitizations, and review Trust Account reconciliations.
  • Assist in managing the REIT's legal entity and account structure, including the formation and assignment of new accounts and legal entities.
  • Review daily deliverables, analyze significant variances, and prepare/review daily projected cash flow/liquidity reporting.
  • Assist in monthly and quarterly close processes, including the review of journal entries, preparation of structured financing waterfall processes, and assistance with new structured financings and related financial reporting covenants.
  • Contribute to the preparation of consolidated financial statements, including the gathering and analysis of information from the general ledger system and various departments.
  • Review and prepare monthly work papers, accruals, and account roll-forwards, and maintain process and procedures documentation.

Qualification and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent, with prior experience in a Big 4 accounting firm preferred.
  • Minimum of 4 years' accounting experience in the financial services sector.
  • Strong initiative and drive, with hands-on experience in general ledger systems being advantageous.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced functions such as VLOOKUP, INDEX, HLOOKUP, XIRR, TRIM, Pivot tables, and a demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and Word.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, effective communication skills, and strong organizational abilities.
  • Ability to identify opportunities for process improvements and make relevant recommendations across the business.
